Gym Aliens! Back to the Basics!!!

Finally its back to the gym for me. Its been at least a month or two since I have been surrounded by the enengy you can only get from being in a good routine in a gym. Moving and family have filled our empty spaces; but now its back to the grind. Its terrifying how easy it is to get out to the groove of things that are a benefit to you. When I entered last night, I had my iPOD ready to blast, my gloves snug and my attitude geared up. As luck would have it, I ran into some people I hadnt seen for many years but a good long time friend. Of course, he was PUMPED! Wurd ChanMan!
back to the basics


I remember being in the zone and some pud who hadnt worked out in a while spending all his time talking about what he used to do and how hard it is to get back into it all walking up to me and whining the whole time. That wasnt going to be me. Ground Zero! Cap snug. Grab weight and zone out. Hit the tunes and hit the iron. I went right for the kill. No, I couldnt do what I used to do. No, it wasnt as easy as it once was. No, I didnt start where I left off. The difference between smart people and wise people is usually some serious injury. Wisdom means you weren't that smart before now. Guess I got both. I am not intimidated by looking like a wienny with wienny-weight. Its the foundations that give you longevity. Form always counts; how much weight is only relative. Trust me, there will always be someone stronger, bigger or else. Anyway, I anticipate being a little sore by tomorrow.


My iPOD day has been great. Today is my Rare Rotation Day. Rare Rotation grooves you with great music from rare grooves, essential funk, the soul of R&B, hip-hop classics, jazz and the best of lounge, electronic, rock and alter. Nothing new under the sun; every river begins as a stream. This podcast always gives me a big surprise when I update for the next morning and moves the day right along.

Anyway...give me a couple of months; you'll see. "I'll be back!"

Wed - nes - DAY! Just the crumbs, please!

Its another gorgeous day despite starting out a bit rainy in the city. The temperature is pleasant and it brings out buried people pleasantries. Ahhh...Spring/summer. I say that cause its nice before it gets too hot and humid to have the arid breeze that massages us through the day.

What does anyone know about deer whistles and do they work? ....personal accounts only please.

The other night my honey and I were blazing down the highway (yes, I was driving) I-40 with a large diesel truck to my left just after dark. Of course we were in excess of 50mph when these glowing eyes bounded into the lane; then two other eyes. The other driver slammed on his brakes just as I did the same. It could have been really bad; but thanks God, it wasn't. I continued on to Demos' Steakhouse only to discover absolutely no damage from my slight bump of the large animal. By then, Pickle's heart had slowed down enuf to eat a bite.

Anyway, as some of you might know, I am an avid "Appleon" — a die-hard Macintosh Disciple for the last 16 years. Having only lately discovered the iPOD and its musings, it has really transformed my busy days and the times in between. I don't think I would enjoy the commitment of podcasting; but it has some merit.

Remember a gift doesn't always come with a price tag. Some of the most special and precious gifts are a Big 'ole bear hug, or a gift of service. Doing something for someone just out of the blue may mean more then any material gift. A homemade card or made up poem of how you really feel can be very rewarding to that person. Plus it's a gift that keeps on giving...

BONUS TIP:
Everyone knows about pouring vinegar down the sink to
freshen the smell, but don't pour vinegar right out of
the bottle. First run the vinegar through the coffee
pot to clean that, or do any of the other many chores
you do with vinegar, and THEN run the USED vinegar
down the sink. It works just as well, and you save
even more.

Hats OFF!!!

The fantastic air temperature and the warm brilliance of the sunlit day make some dream of hiking in the deep woods littered with hills and valleys. I can imagine sitting on my deck watching the sun rise envelope the cool morning with its warm yellow tints. I love to watch the sunlight play with the dew drops, the way the colors swirl and change as the light dances around and through the transparent breasts of moisture hanging from the leaves. It's really nice when a slight breeze from some invisible giant walks across the the long grass, arching it in fields of waves, first one foot then the other.

Its Wednesday and I am hard at it with my trusty Macintosh blazing through a QuarkXpress document with Photoshop chuckling in the background. Today's blog I will dedicate to an act of kindness I was witness to from my perch above the city. I arrived early this morning and as custom, I stand in th shadow of the Batman building watching the city below; what fascinating ants they be. I watched a man in a wheelchair painstakingly try to climb a long hill. I watched the string of cars that passed him, glanced at him, glanced away from him and some that just ignored him. Chances are that he had navigated this hill many times before; but he would not have to today. My coworker exits his vehicle. I was curious to see what would happen. I could tell from the furrow in his brow what I anticipated he would do; now I would see first hand. I watched the thoughts zing back and forth through his mind, trying to rationalize his decision to or not to help. I knew when I saw him place his bag on the ground that he indeed would attempt to assist. I watched him gingerly stroll up behind the struggling wheel-chair bound man fighting the downhill gravity. I could tell that some greeting was given and an offer of assistance. Clearly the man was thankful and very obliged. I also noticed the line of cars filled with people who were watching just as I was considering whether to or not to assist. Its funny how we react to some things. Some were proud of the simple human kindness; but others were frustrated. I dont know if it was from the guilt of not doing it themselves or the need that it needed to be done by someone or even worse; the disgust that they were forced to even notice what they would have casually blotted from their attention.

In some conversations with the homeless, they speak of the invisibility they experience. Continued probing revealed a-not-unpredictable human experience from a homeless perspective; but more accurately, a human perspective. We ALL want to be noticed, to be cared about, to not be forgotten, to matter. We spend all our lives attempting to achieve any and all of these pretending that none of them matter to us. Its like the kid with the mohawk that acts offended when people look at him funny at the funeral. We see so many things that we feel powerless to effect that we would rather look away or pretend it doesnt exist. Thats how strongly we need all of those things we dont need. We would like to believe that what we have is because of what we do or deserve or how good, special or talented we are; but the truth is far less aloof. In fact, any of us could have just as easily been born in another country as quick as being homeless or handicapped etc. Sure some circumstances bring on some of these conditions; but they could have been your conditions.

Anyway, hats of, pensive one, for a deed well done on this sunny anything-better-to-do day that you could so easily have decided to "let somebody else help day." It is the mark of a man that his actions unnoticed are still noble.

...The Untouchable Tastic!..

Well it's Wednesday and I am in my rare form — "energyfeeder" form; embracing the "untouchable tastic!" It's like an energy form all its own. It ebbs and swells and is surfable if you can stay with its viscious darting moves. It's a wild ride when you're tapped into the force of the universe. Typically, its very scary knowing you could lose yourself at any minute...like being swallowed by a tidal wave and being wiped out, burried under an unfathomable momentum. Maui is still fresh in my mind; the sound of the surf, the smell of the warm air and the relaxation of the bliss. I have been running full steam every since. The light remains only a dime-sized goal; never moving closer and sometimes blinking. I have re-started making a list of achieveables to guard my focus and energies. Making a reasonably short list of "to do's" helps increase the momentum necessary to be able to funnel and/or ride the energy of the cosmos. My head feels like a Broadway sign with all the old fashioned light bulbs going around the sign...everything is flashing, the hum of the electricity moving from filament to filament is deafening.


Its like watching every movie at once; like hearing a thousand conversations; but trying to listen to just one. That's where I am; not sure how but it happens occassionally; especially when I am on the downside of possible and under the weight of the unliftable. Something else is here with me; maybe within me. It's enuf to make you never want to be without the buzz of it and yet I often am. Arrgh...even now; with the distraction of having a walkman in one ear currently playing "Spirit in the Sky," I can hear the person across the room breathing and snorting, the spit leaking down the back of his throat like cooling lava from a volcano miles away. The lights overhead blink as the electricity nods at its passing opposites on neighboring wires, the cars outside pause at the red light as the gas flows through its veins like metal blood, even the bird taking off from the wire just out the window who chirps at being airborne; all in symphony with the roar of a huge transit bus driving through. Oh well....mmmmm....I like it, I like it all. As my fingers continue to race at emptying the fullness of my mind; I picture the condensation that occurs when cool air glazes a window and droplets form until they are so heavy, they begin to run — then the memory of watching rain on a windshield treated with RainX spread like terrified spiders across the windshield leaving it completely clear and dry. Its all so marvelous. Its all so mysterious. The gift of such little things that we may never understand and typically not even notice are continually given to us almost free of charge. I hope I get to keep this for the rest of my week. Life is most thrilling when we are off the security of the ground; suspended by Faith and Hope; defying the logic to look down; for looking down will steal any freedom from gravity and you will fall — some even sink. The eagle belongs in the sky; he's vulnerable on the ground.

You Can't Make the Jump Til You Bump the Hump!

It's Wednesday; the one they call "hump day." For me, it's that point that says "half way over." You can't get there without going past here. I suppose that's true of a lot of things about life. We always want to fast-forward to the part we anticipate to be more exciting or relaxing. Typically, if it is actually either of those, it goes way faster than the other long days before and you're back at jump.

All that aside or at least in stride; back to the title. I love watching the X-sports — yeah, the ones with the motorcycles doing 360's over eighty feet above the ground. Even as a kid, we would set up ramps consisting of a plank, a block and something in the way. There's something about barreling toward a ramp knowing how great its gonna be if everything goes well. We love to defy gravity. That's why we love Superman, Evil Knievel, drifting and "hey bubba watch this." I cant image what it feels like to ride a bull. I watch PB Riding too....eight seconds can be a lot longer than u think.

Evil KnievelAnyway, the moral of the story is this: You can't make the jump, til you bump the hump. Part of the reason we experience tough moments in life is that it helps us make the jump. These "humps" or opportunities as some might try to make you believe make the tires of our lives disconnect from the norm and allow us through upset to leave the ground, to be free of our humdrum, to dislodge from our expected and mondane to become airborne, even weightless. It is at these times, somewhere between "oh yeah" and "oh no," we encounter our bump and are catapulted to a new destination, a new level of "us" that leaves us stronger, more alive or at least "unsame."

We seem to hate change the older we become. I am trying to train myself to pedal faster toward the new ramps. I know that will increase my hangtime in an attempt be more "unsame" evenmoreso.

SMILE! It's Only Raining Outside...









For all the sun of yesterday; the dreary rain of today exacts its punishment. Really, I don't mind the rain; but I LOVE a thunderstorm; today it's just rain. I made a remark to a friend that sparked this blog, "It's Only Raining Outside..." I am not sure where it's going to go; but I guess we will find out together. It was a 2am night for me; so the morning stormed into my conscienceness violently. Thank God my honey called; I was at the Sleep Hotel and no doorman was going to ring my bell for at least 4 more hours that I couldn't have. So, you make that mad scramble to get on top of things and get out the door; but you know that the rain changes everything....potientially late to definitely late.


Nonetheless, it's another great day! I think I like that line because "its only raining outside" reminds me of some things that I have known for so long that you take them for granted....u know what I mean...sugar is sweet, ice is cold, coffee is HOT kind of stuff. I am reminded of the great Apostle Paul who declared he had found the secret of happiness in Philippians 4:11-13 (NIV)
(11) I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. (12) I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. (13) I can do everything through him who gives me strength.


There's always gonna be a rotten apple in the pie. It's hard work not to let that bite ruin the meal. Remembering and refreshing in empowering phrases and realities transforms my circumstances. My friends are all sick of my "Glow-in-the-Dark" Smiley Face shirts; maybe rightly so since I have at least 14; one for every day of the week. If you don't see it, its under something else or I am saving it for gym time. You can never under estimate the power of a smile, even in the dark. A guy at the gym stopped me once and asked where my smiley face was. Even jocks are lured by its peaceful disposition. His response was completely unexpected. He went on to say, "you don't realize that maybe somebody just walking around in here feels better just because they see that crazy shirt." He convinced me...even if its just me catching my own reflection, "it's only raining outside..." Everyday people are subconsciously effected by what they see, hear, feel or smell. It's such a duh statement that its easy to take for granted. Life is short; at least make somebody else's better. I would say its free; but it isn't. (1) People think you cannot afford another shirt (2) Sometimes you get pulled or pushed out of your comfort zone (3) You may even have to NOT think about yourself or your needs (4) and lastly, as I say many times a week, what's feelings got to do with gravity; you just do it because it needs to be done.

Good friends always serve up something funny or insightful. Keep them close. If they aren't, get some new ones. Who you hang out with is who you become. If you don't believe me, stand beside somebody who starts itching.....soon you will be reaching too. Anyway, it's Wednesday, the day in the middle. I am glad to be the oldest child, the middle is too far from either shore. [ha ha ah....I dont know where that came from, so I can't send it back.] Don't let life's rain leave you soaked unless you're in the swimming pool. There's ALWAYS something good you just haven't seen yet and even more just around the corner. [I know, if you were standing close enuf, you would hit me.] I need more gummy bears!

...De Blog, De Blog, De Blog!

Wow, seems like I have been gone for months....but its only been a couple of days. But here I am; so what of it. Hmmm....well earlier today a robin was sited for streaking at the Polar Bear Races in Arizona. When asked why he didn't win, he replied, I guess I sprung too quick. [ok...now thats wacky cracky; I dont know where that came from, so I cant send it back.]

Noteables of the week: I have a great new recipe for green beans; but I have to wait til Friday Fixins to give you that. I got some new gadgets: a rocket pen from Seattle, Washington, a mini USB lava lamp from the land of the geeks and a cool wireless stapler Thanks to you!---and you know who you are for sending excellent geek gifts for my Geek Day. I had a blast babysitting my 5yr old nephew over the weekend and best of all, my honey is back in the jug...maybe I should have just said house! I got a million flowers planted on this past beautiful and much warmer Sunday. It's always exciting to see life in all its brilliant slendor. I also have a ruthlessly pruned Japanese Maple that I am still holding out for to make a triumphant return to the land of the living.

Well it's a short week; and that typically means that you pay for it somehow. This go-around is no different. I have projects coming out of every hole and no time to plug the dike. Some of my equipment is obedient to Murphy's Law without any regards for my needs and at the worst possible times. Oh well...life goes on. I suppose I underestimated the power of a garage; I am way under-dressed for today's temperature — which won't matter if my vehicle remains faithful. This day is sliding on by...I am waving it by merrily as I dream of the islands and evening out my tan (after a few really hard workouts).
