Folly, Frolic and Fridaku

courtesy of Mother Nature Network

I must confess upfront of my embarrassment over not regularly blogging this year. I plan to change that shortly. Its not from an abundance of stimuli. In my location, it is the nexus of everything possible and did you see that. It keeps the weeks pretty interesting. We like that. No two days are ever alike and a great conversation is always just around the corner with our group. Thats another thing to be thankful. It is rare that you can enjoy what you do surrounded by who you like. There are very few ways to make it better sans a crystal blue ocean, a distant sea gull, efficient waiters and a great wi-fi.

What a wonderful time to be alive. I cannot imagine being able to see Alexander G. Bell or Tessler beholding what they discovered having become so much more. It must appear like magic or witchcraft. Imagine trying to explain that a cellphone needs no wires; that people oceans apart could see images of each other in real time talking as if there was no distance or the harnessing of electricity in so many avenues, including solar energy. That would be worth a million conversations. In my short lifetime; I think back to the first black and white tv we owned, the first cellphone in a huge bag that was more like weight-training than technology or the first fax machine (and lets be honest-they were horrible) transmitting images from one place to another or the old polaroid camera that could snap a picture and develop before your eyes. Those were the days. Days of a pleasant memory that would allow you to appreciate the present technology and its advancements.

I know it wont be long before kids will have no idea of what a phone booth, fax machine, light bulb, gasoline, walking in public parks, skipping rocks or personal conversations in public. The smaller the world has become through technology; the farther apart we have become. I barely know my neighbors, let alone anyone on the street. I can hardly be completely where I am for answering or sending a text message or taking a call. I can hardly enjoy a good movie for being disappointed in the special effects or some other seduction of technology. We live in great times; great good and great sad. To preserve our humanity, we may well have to retreat to the past someday when noone remembers what it once was.

Well its Friday again. That means that the cohort and I have a long honored tradition of haikus on Friday. Its a fun thing and somewhat an enjoyable activity. So without more rambling; on to the feat!

Looking Backwards Forward

What would you say to you if you could come back from the future once?
Would you have waited this long to come back?
Would you listen to you if you gave yourself advice?

Beware the Dark: Our Black Hearts

jason

This morning was extra stormy with gloomy clouds. an angry wind and a bit of chill in the air. NOW, the sun is out and no evidence that a storm came this way or passed through remains. You never know what you dont know. I was reading another blog this morning about fear and its power over us; I thought it was pretty good. I tend to enjoy knowing the monster I'm facing probably more than is healthy.

You've heard it said, "WE have nothing to fear but FEAR itself..." Well that sounds great as a quote; but really? I dont think that holds much credibility. In fact, I would go so far as to say its an out and out lie; some snipet of logic thrown out to be penned for all time as great. I beg to differ. Its easy to see there is plenty to fear and even be afraid of. NOW, its the paralization that comes from fear that is more the enemy. If we cannot advance or receede, then we shall surely die where we stand. He who runs away lives to fight another day. He who's dumb enough to stay was buried where he lay. In our American history we have reached a point beyond eloquent speeches and the political nod that typically means business as usual. We are getting close to the end of the rope for ourselves and the generations to follow. Is doom inevitable? NO; but it may be necessary. How do CEO's, financial managers, banks, etc get to do such a horrible job and still keep their jobs PLUS bailout money to do it again???? Clearly Im in the wrong profession. Its funny to hear that now they say banks have been hoarding the bailout money to buy out smaller banks instead of passing it along to the consumers......ya think???? Money is rarely the solution; the fault always lies in the heart.

Sometimes you dont have to see it to be endangered by it. The prey that doesnt see the predator is no less dead.

I'll Be Home for Christmas

Thats the title of a great song that always reminds me of my mother's smile. It was something about the idea of surviving all year to be able to return home as confirmation to my parents that all the hard times were worth it. Its one of those understoods that is expected of you after you've been away all year whether thats college or adulthood. It gets a little more complicated after you're married deciding who and which and when that trip happens. Regardless of any logic, it's still expected that you'll be home for Christmas. Its a given....like Mother's Day.

I don't go home as often these days. She's no longer with us. I wonder sometimes if its the knowing that keeps me away or am I really that busy or that otherwise obligated. You learn real quick where the glue was when its gone and all the excuses fall away when there's noone else to blame. Fathers are great but they arent mothers. Let's face it, men get off easy when it comes to children and all the responsibilities they create. In fact, some just check out for a new deal. Mothers tend to believe and hope no mater what completely unconditionally. Now, that doenst mean that you wont hear about it twenty-four seven; but their love never dwindles.

There's a crisp in the air, second only to that Halloween breeze that ushers summer away. Its this time of the year that Bing Crosby can be heard in the background singing "I'll be home for christmas" as you remember the smile in the voice asking when you're coming. Its amazing and terrifying what women endure for their children. Men dont seem to have that same commitment/burden built into their souls. I can remember even on my worst days how my mother would always still be worried about any and everything she couldnt change or dissuade me from doing.

Bing Crosby>

I was fortunate. She was there to see my highschool graduation, college graduation, wedding, love my bride and dance one last time...."Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. When its moving pictures, its worth a thousand paragraphs. Home reminds us of our duties that can be easily ignored because we are "busy" with our own lives. Home regrounds us with purpose and a launchpad for future inspirations/aspirations. Home reminds us of our dreams as little kids when nothing was impossible. Home convicts us of being loved no matter what; the security of "always." Yeah, I'll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams.....

Stuck in the 80's!

Ok...you already know I listen to an iPOD to feed my creative monsters. Today I accidented upon this: Stuck in the 80's! Now I didnt think it would be that good; but it was pretty fun and really brought back some memories. I did like, maybe love the 80's! I can remember my brainwaves during that evolutionary point in my life....(smile, laugh, choke). Anyway, Napolean Dynamite would have been proud.

Fabulous Banana Friday Fixins!

I gotta pee!!!

I gotta go...!

Ah, the Music City is earning its name this week. Its CMA Festival time and the city is shuffling with visitors. Nashville is a great city; too small to be hick, to big to be ignored. I like going to lunch seeing a mix of peoples. A stew just isnt as good with just corn. Anyway, its Friday again but it seems like another long week. In spite of just returning from California (which is another town I love) I am fast and furious on my responsibilities that linger from my absence. Its all good. I only play to win; I only lose to learn.

This is a typical story. I left the office at lunch and was in my car before realizing that I needed to take a leak. So where can I go thats quick, convenient and has a clean bathroom. In my case, I went to Arbys. By now, they know me — way too many visits per week. So I park and take the stroll toward the front door. Clearly a busy spot, the warm sun gleaming on my smooth soft brown with a smiley face on my chest and a baseball cap on my dome; all laced with a smile. I yack with the manager about what I wanted and swaggered to the louve. "WHAT!!!???" I walked in and it was Niagara Falls. The urinal was running full blast and running down the wall and floors. Surely someone had been here before me and why wouldnt they have said anything. I guess I better hold it a while longer. I back out with wet soles and inform the manager of my discovery. She asks if I giggled the handle; of course, in case I didnt need to say anything. So with sandwich in hand I am back outside headed for my vehicle thinking about Murphy's Law and how its always funny if you let later be now. I knew if I looked back on this later and thought about all the times Arbys had been guaranteed except this one time I really needed it ..... ha ha ha ha on me.

Off to the office I returned as I finished my sandwich. Hey, I waited this long, I might as well get something good to drink thats cool for the duration of the day. A Red Bull, water and Starbucks DoubleShot Vanilla, I had almost forgotten of my need until I was comfortably at my desk making a 32-pdf. Of course, at this point, everything is completely fine again. Aint life grand. Funny what altered focus will accomplish. Nonetheless; the weekend awaits and I am ready to receive. No plans; just openness! But if I get to cook; here's a thought!

Fabulous Friday Fixins: Again!
This one contains one of my all time favorite sweets. Nilla Wafers. You know which ones; anything else aint worth banannas!

Banana Pudding

Banana Pudding Tarts
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 C. vanilla wafer crumbs
1/2 C melted butter
1-2 ripe bananas
1 vanilla pudding mix made according to directions
Redi-Whip or any other whipped topping, if desired

Nilla Wafers

Crush the vanilla wafers. Melt butter, or margarine. Mix
crumbs and butter well.

Partially fill a muffin pan with the mix. Press firmly to
the sides and bottom making a cup. Put in freezer for 2
hours.

Make the pudding mix while the crusts are in the freezer.
Let it set a bit in the fridge.

Slice bananas into 1/2" slices.

Use a pointed knife, gently release shells from pan. Place
on a large plate or cookie sheet.

Put a banana slice in the bottom, then a dollop of the
pudding...fill with pudding. Chill to fully set.

Put another slice on top...I put them on their edge so they
sit up on top. A squish of whipped cream is nice, too.
Another great recipe

Well thats all I got; so go get yours.

Mysterious Mothers; Vessels of Love

mothers embrace
photo courtesy: Nashville artist James Threalkill; Mother's Embrace

Another weekend under the belt. Hope everyone had a happy or at least a thankful Mother's Day. Mothers; they're pretty special people. There is something magic about mothers. Some of it is hard to translate into words; but today I might just try at least a little.

Mothers:

They seem to have a capacity beyond fathers to love unconditionally; even through their disappointments and personal/emotional injury. I say that because it seems to be more true than the opposite. Rarely do you see the father show up on TV crying or begging the child to return or be returned or to give up peacefully. Men are more judgemental and final. We have different rules to live and die by. Our ability to give the benefit of the doubt and countless mercies seem far stretched after some magic number in our heads. Its always the mother willing to go beyond the believeable for her offspring; sometimes even starving to feed her children. Men seem to operate under the guise of "I'll just make more..."

I am always amazed at a mothers capacity to hurt when you hurt. Whether its a scrape of the knee or the heart; she's always in tune with your level of suffering. In spite of being typically taken for granted, her capacity rarely diminishes. That's amazing...probably even spiritual. She finds a way to lighten or at least endure the burden of suffering along with you. Noone ever does everything right; but I do believe most do the best they can with the given circumstances. In the end, every man AND woman dies for themselves; nothing can change that destiny. However, I am certain that if mothers could do that for you; they sure would try.

mothers touch

There's just something about a mothers smile; the way her eyes light up when she sees you coming or her ears perk when she hears your footsteps or even he silent communication at a glance, thought or touch. All of these little notes your mind makes note of especially when you arent paying attention so it can randomly remind you when you arent so guarded. Its only in the quiet alone times that men might even begin to note the silent burdens of a mothers love.

Happy Mothers Day. Such a love would appear to be a burden; hence I am still glad to be a man learning to understand the journey of woman to mother or at least offer my two cents and try to help where I can. Wow, momma, you sure had your hands full....

Silence is GOLDEN; words over-rated

quiet time

...it is my silence that billows like the ocean's thunder; not sugary speeches of insincerity...

Wow! It's been a spell since I got to let the brain leak. I was just thinking about how good silence really is and what can be gained from it. It is in this chasm of non-clutter that we might actually discover not only ourselves; but our own genius. Like an anchor in the sea, we can still our ship and really appreciate the stars, as well as gain a better understanding of our location and destination. I LOVE my silence as much as I love my alone time. In the stillness one learns how to move and in which direction with the effectiveness of now; not someday.

I have fond memories of my old college roommate and I sitting in a dark room with a candle and something on the rocks and absolutely no words...just the occassional whisper of a sip or movement of a flickering candle...enjoying company alone...ahhh nice! I still have his poem he wrote and had framed for my wedding 6 yrs ago...still very treasured. Thanks S*@!Fish.

Silence is really valuable when everything else in our lives is roaring and rumbling. Wisdom is often not accompanied by noise; but silence; thick winter blankets of it.

Time is a windchime

...if Time stopped moving; would I be frozen without motion?
If the wind were Time, would I look windblown?
If I could ride the winds of Time, would I become too tired for Eternity?....."

It would seem I have been at a loss of words for the last couple of weeks; as if they were all used up. Actually we have been kind of under the weather a little. (hmmm...how do you get "under" the weather...) I have plenty to blog about actually everyday; but its easy to get too busy and side-tracked if I dont get it out in the early morning. Oh well. Please accept my apologies. None-the-less, ( I suppose thats the cousin of none-the-more...) I am getting this little blitter out.

Everything changes; change is the only thing that doesn't. Its going to be the year of change I had asked for afterall. I am sure I will get deeper into that as time arrives. Besides, if you're going to bother changing; it might as well be drastic. Why get a haircut of only a few centimeters when a shave would have been the same price....so go all the way!

Its a beautiful day here in sunny Nashville and everyone is roaming from here to there. I had enjoyed my drive in with wifey. It was a beautiful day to commute for a whole lot of good reasons. It would have been an ideal day for hiking, canoing or just a woodsy walk. Unfortunately we hadn't been to the gym for 2 weeks and tonite probably wouldnt be any different. With dinner already home; the evening is open to be unwrapped. Its the kind of day that great summer outdoor yard work would be excellent; but not yet. Two funerals have gone by already; one with a white hearse, the last was a black hearse. Each was escorted by sirens and headlighted cars. Spring and winter are the opposite sides of a coin.

We are surrounded by doors. As we enter or exit, someone else does the same. There is no way for a "one way transaction." Something enters, something exits. That is the code of the universe. The wind from my tiny fan tickles my face on its way to the window and plants behind my chair. Its a beautiful day here in sunny Nashville and everyone is roaming from here to there.

Thursday Flash!

Hmmmm.....
Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

...much more...

Blind Insight; Friday Fixin's!

internal vision

Its been a month of many things. I am not sure what to blog about these days...so many choices and so little time. Things have been busy but things have been good and in some areas, never better. I try to take and even make time to be thankful and give thanks. Everything we have is a gift and precious to be guarded. I try to learn my future lessons now. I suppose thats why I am fascinated by the idea of time travel. In the same breath; I could only wonder what horrors we would create if we were ever capable of such things. I would love to think that we would use such an ability to right the wrongs of the cosmos; but I know we would more than likely go steal all the greatest inventions and breakthroughs and almanacs from the future so we could live as kings now.

insight
A noun
1  insight, sixth sense
grasping the inner nature of things intuitively
2  penetration, insight
clear or deep perception of a situation
3  insight, brainstorm, brainwave
the clear (and often sudden) understanding of a complex situation

framing perception

However; this blog is about "insight." It's that mysterious force that allows us to know the future or know which direction to go or when someone needs us, is injured or dead. I typically trust my insight and instincts far more than my eyes and ears. My wifey marvels, as do I, how I get to locations without directions even when I go in the completely opposite direction. (stubborn tank-full courage). I think it was Einstein or that said or Spoc I heard that said, "when you have eliminated the possible; then the impossible must be true..." other cool quotes and musings.... How do we activate the many unseen and unexplained gifts we all probably posess? Is there a sense after the sixth?

All that has made me hungry. So without further yammer; its time for a Double-Feature Fixins of Friday Fixins!
These recipes may produce unwanted calories, bulges or pounds. PLEASE exercise accordingly....

S-H - E - L - L --SHOCKED!

trapped inside

Behind the golden temple lies the strings of the grand puppet. Pay no attention to the shadows walking around behind these eyes. That they are, is what they are...staring into the depths of your hidden self; so hidden you probably won't discover it's there until..... It's a blessing; its a curse; its the way it is. A clam has a shell, a turtle has a shell, a bullet has a shell; conversely, so do people. But what people don't discover until they need it is the other shell — a skeleton below the shell burried beneath and in between all the fragile softness of our mortality.

shell shockedEven the brain has a shell, the skull. I was watching an episode of CSI last week and they had found a young woman who had fallen from the side of a cliff. Nothing unusual until I glance back to watch them discovering her brain 6 feet away up the hill from the body in perfect condition. I can't say the same for the shell.

But the turtle cannot leave its shell....we are bound to ourselves for the duration of our termination. Indeed we require our shells to survive; but they also ensure our death. Death owns the highways Life built and travels them recklessly perfect. Isn't perfection oddly cruel... Maybe its just poetic.

Glad my shell is inside....

In Dust We Trust

Dust Invasion

"The invasion has begun. Their numbers already outnumber us 2 million to 1. Swiffer armies are surrounded. Armageddon is coming...." Actual dust mites enlarged for your awareness.

It's always one of those subjects that people always raise an eyebrow...moving. Suddenly, most people start running the other way. Suddenly, everybody is busy and have other things to do...but that's another blog.

Moving is one of those things that reveals what lies beneath and what lies under. Dust, it is the beautiful confirmation that our humanity is temporary; evidence that we are shedding like a radioactive human components with a short shelf-life. It is also evidence of the unseen being more than alive and well. How does it get there? Where does it come from? How does it know where to hide? What can we learn from dust? and finally; If we were dust, would we get dusted or lay forever immersed in the dark private shag corners of our own lives?

It's finally Friday for a week that's been almost a year long. I leave you with wisdom and food; a combination for the body and the mind. I'll let you feed your own spirit in your choice manner. Present your charms.

The Hearts of Men; the Soul of Angels

dead angels

Its Thursday and its been one of those weeks that lasts a month. The minutes crawl by with the speed of cold molassass on a frozen country morning in the hills of the heartland. My words fight inside my skull like trapped angry popcorn springing and exploding in every direction at all times. I dont know if that is good or bad; on the other hand, I dont know why that matters enuf that I should ask such a question at each crux of the road. And here I sit above the popcorn staring and marveling at the same time of its repeated strains against an impassable barrier. Outside I hear the sirens of a fire engine going to rescue the helpless. Who are the helpless? Was it their destiny or their choice? I dont know; but the popcorn crashes into the dome and then is pelted back to the surface too hot for it to survive and too tired to spring again. The mitosis of thought is like that; with the end of every thought is the birth of another. What magic makes such things so?

Bruce Springstein in my ears attempts to distract me from time seeming to run in reverse. I am listening one of the truely great songs of his bountiful career. Some might argue that music has color; my response would be does life? Are we not all stings of the same chord of a song we think we determine the notes of running down its chorus with few ideas of the notes ahead or when the song ends....? Nonetheless...."Philadelphia;" what a great song with incredible lyrics. The deep haunting of a soul bass draws you into the muse of a story so delicate its deadly and the truth leaks out into yesterday's memories and today's tradgedies....

Philadelphia
I was bruised and battered and
I couldnt tell What I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
I saw my reflection in a window
I didnt know my own face
Oh brother are you gonna leave me
Wastin´away
On the streets of philadelphia

Dream a Little Dream of Me!

I had a dream for the last couple of nights but I havent been able to remember them. Occassionally throughout the day, some little thing happens and sparks a memory of just a flash from the dream. As you may know, I am always fascinated by the mind's abilities, tapped and untapped. Speaking of dream; they can provide answers and glimpses of the yet-to-comes. Madame C.J. Walker - From Dream to Millionaire

C.J.Walker

Madame C.J. Walker (1867-1919) is cited by the Guinness Book of Records as the first female American self-made millionaire. She was also the first member of her family born free.

Madame Walker founded and built a highly successful African-American cosmetic company that made her a millionaire many times over. Walker was suffering from a scalp infection that caused her to loose most of her hair in the 1890's. She began experimenting with patented medicines and hair-care products.

Then, she had a dream that solved her problems:

Walker Book"He answered my prayer, for one night I had a dream, and in that dream a big, black man appeared to me and told me what to mix up in my hair. Some of the remedy was grown in Africa, but I sent for it, mixed it, put it on my scalp, and in a few weeks my hair was coming in faster than it had ever fallen out. I tried it on my friends; it helped them. I made up my mind to begin to sell it."

Walker was an entrepreneur, philanthropist and social activist. She best sums up her rise from a childhood in the poor south to being the head of an international, multi-million dollar corporation in the following quote:

"I am a woman who came from the cotton fields of the South. From there I was promoted to the washtub. From there I was promoted to the cook kitchen. And from there I promoted myself into the business of manufacturing hair goods and preparations....I have built my own factory on my own ground."

Interesting, isnt it? Well I have yet to be able to completely control or even instigate a dream; but I am working on it. My pastor always said, "you dont have a money problem; you have an idea problem..." Hmmm....I got no shortage of ideas; maybe they are just not good ones...but all in due time. 2008 still looms before us like a juggernaut refusing to be changed. Juggernauts fall harder than big men knocked out. So let it be done. May the shockwave from the fall usher in an age of unyielding prosperity in all areas.

Get the Red OUT! Ben there; Done That!

The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday
Morning Commentary. Since I agreed; I had to post for your review and consideration.

My confession:
I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does
not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up,
bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel
discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me. I
don't think they are sligh ting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto.
In fact, I kind of like it.

It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time
of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on d isplay
at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu . If people want a
creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think
Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people
who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period.

I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly
atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we
should worship Brad and Angelina and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him?

I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of
us who are wondering where Brad and Angelina came from and where the America
we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a
little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's
intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane
Clayson asked her 'How could God let something like this happen?' (regarding Katrina)

Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said,
'I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years
we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our
government and to get out of our lives.

And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How
can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He
leave us alone?'

In light of recent events.....terrorists attacks, school shootings, etc.
I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body
found recently) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK.

Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says
thou shalt not kill, t hou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as
yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they
misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might
damage their self-esteem. (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide.)

We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said OK.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they
don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill
strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it
out. I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the
world's going to hell.

Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible
says.

Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and the y spread like
wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people
think twice about sharing.

Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through
cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and
workplace.

Are you laughing?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on
your ad dress list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they
will think of you for sending it.

Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than
what God thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit. If not then just discard it... no
one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit
back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

My Best Regards.
Honestly and respectfully,
Ben Stein
