Desiderata: A Timeless Inspiration

    By Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

I was watching the OWN network and Oprah's Masterclass was interviewing Morgan Freeman who spoke about providence and how it guided his life. This poem/writing he sites as an inspiration and a motivation. I was not familiar with this poem; but it adds to the empty space left by a poeticly-inspired father-in-law who enjoyed reciting poetry with me. He will always be missed; not for the poetry, but the understanding of our sameness inspite of obvious differences. As we watched the sunset sipping his favorite on-the-rocks drink, we could recite Poe and Kyan and any other classic poet. He had an amazing memory and mind that always sought to understand everything about the how's of anything.

Of Wind and Mind; Sailing into your Future

photo from HowZit Hong Kong

As I began my morning at the office, I always, without fail, add my earbuds and engage my ipod to listen to my daily batch of podcasts. One of my favorite is the 48 Days.net podcast with Dan Miller of Franklin Tn. I aways go away with something useful from the podcast. This year, I did not create a list of resolutions. Of course, I am immediately reminded of a quote, "fail to plan and plan to fail." I wondered as I listened to this podcast if I have programmed my year for less than its potential. Luckily as I continued to listen and he illustrates a story concerning sailing, he much like I, had assumed that sailing was relegated only by the direction of the wind; but NO, it is the knowledge of knowing the usage of the wind to go in ANY direction you require….powerful. So many good quotes that are worthless unless engaged. Hope you find some encouragement and spark in just a few of these quotes and incredible podcast. The Camera Made Me Do It

It would seem a daunting task to have something to say everyday. It would seem that the act of living provides something new or at least old again to inspire a different thought. I needed my daily liquid fix since I am a creature of habit. At the coffee shop, the ipod on the counter was already feeding as I carried on conversation. As I received my daily embibbing from the Moon Goddess, the spark ignited. Gadgets! These days we have gadgets out the you-know-what! During my pedicure Saturday, I had a delightful conversation with a young Korean of 14yrs old who couldnt wait to become engrossed in conversation. I think it was the "apple" shirt I was wearing. It has that kind of magic! It would be my second favorite shirt; yes, the glow-in-the-dark smiley face is STILL number ONE! The kid, Hoc, likes to do stop movement animation; so we chatted the entire time. I remember saying to him, "when I was your age, computers would take up this entire room; now you can hold it in the palm of your hand." His eyes squeezed shut from his broad smile. I knew right then he was probably thinking what an old dude. I marveled at his enthusiasm and passion for his project and his hobby. I can remember having that...really having it beyond just being inspired because of a particular project. We talked of gadgets, youtube and myspace as his parents occassionally nodded and smiled.

It became apparant that the camera was allowing him this creative outlet. It became apparent that the new generation was directly linked to technology/media and its progress toward human synchronization. More and more people were going to be helpless without their gadgets in the coming years. I didnt even ask him if he knew what a phone booth was. Stop Action Video

Do these gadgets make us more or less creative? Do they inspire new ways of doing what we were once skilled at doing ourselves? Are they making human contact obsolete? Will the human touch be replaced in the future? As the world grows smaller; does the space between each of us increase?

The Blossoms of Inspiration

There is a beautiful release that comes just from writing...just letting it flow. This can easily be complicated by expectations, schedules and anticipations. For me, it works best when I dont plan and just start typing. But I would have to confess, a daily blog can be a bit of a challenge day after day. That is part of the magic — trying to keep it simple and honest, an emptying of only oneself and nothing more.

Inspiration comes as easy as the next breath. Of course that for me is "if" I dont read the previous blog or comments and try to "one up" or "do better" than the previous blog. That robs something from the process for me. Take now, as I see the words form, I am still wondering if this blog will be relevant or even good...I dont know and that's OK I've decided in advance. The magic is in the journey; the destination nev er changes. Hmmm...theres a thought to reflect on for later, maybe now.

ANYWAY, I couldnt help but notice how much warmth is coming from the suns rays this morning...like a big fuzzy hug. I had a great time at church last nite with an inspiring message. That keeps it interesting for me; to be challenged with good information that actually makes sense too with practicals.

I am enjoying this day surrounded by all my gadgets and friends. Its just so nice! The soft swish of my fishtank and the beams of glittering light washing across my keyboard/desk remind me of the great design that reality is so fitted around. Its nice to think that we are more than just lint.

I received this email from a friend who has a great dog she needs to pass along to a good family...
Hey All ~

I need your help.  As you know I have the 4 dogs.  Recently there has been a lot of tension that has developed between 2 of them (Ruga and Charlie).   Ruga (my smallest) has decided that he needed to show his dominance around the house and has started picking fights with Charlie.

I have come to the conclusion that I need to find a home for Charlie. I took him in about 2 1/2 years ago when he showed up at my house on a cold January night.  You can tell that he has been abused, but he is the sweetest, most lovable dog and he does not have an ounce of aggression in him.  He is wonderful in the house......half the time I have to go looking for him because he has found a corner to lay in.   He is an older dog -- the vet is guessing 8-9 years old.  He looks like he is a mix breed of a German Shepherd/Yellow Lab/Beagle.  And he weighs about 55-60 pounds.  He has had all of his shots and up on his heart-worm medicine but he is not neutered.  He would make the perfect farm/house dog.  Everyone has suggested taking him to a no-kill shelter, but he is an old dog that I am certain will not adopt out.  The thought of him living in a crate would kill me.

If I can't find him a home....my only other choice is to take him to the vet and put him down.  I am pleading with each of you, if you know of anyone that would be interested in taking him please let me know.  I am attaching some pictures of him.

I really appreciate all of your help.....email: zozobean@comcast.net
